Service Tips

How do I know when my car needs a "brake job"?

Generally, you need a brake repair when your brake linings are worn down to the minimum acceptable thickness specified by the vehicle manufacturer. The only way to determine if new linings are required is to have them inspected. At Terry's Tire Town, all brake inspections are completely free. The inspection will be fully explained to you and you will receive a no-obligation, written estimate if repairs are necessary.

You may also need a brake repair if you are having braking problems like grabbing, pulling, low or soft pedal, pedal vibration or noise.

Many other service facilities advertise a $59.95 Brake Job "Special". Be aware that they will only be replacing the two linings on the front of your vehicle. Doing only front brakes is common and can save you moneyÉbut only if the rear brakes are in good condition.

The biggest problem with brake specials you may see advertised in the newspaper is that the price is very misleading. The final price of a brake repair depends entirely on the work that needs to be performed. Therefore, many advertised specials are not firm prices. Instead, they are simplified estimates of the absolute least amount of money it MIGHT cost to get your brakes fixed.

So, be wary of brake job prices. It is impossible to quote a price without a complete brake inspection. Only then can an accurate determination be made of the necessary repairs and parts. And, if you suspect a braking problem, get a free inspection as soon as possible. Many times, the longer you wait, the more expensive potential repairs can be.
